William G. Asp Memorial Scholarship

The Dakota County Library Foundation is honored to offer a scholarship in memory of William G. Asp.

The Dakota County Library System was most fortunate to be led by one of the outstanding librarians in Minnesota, William "Bill" Asp. Mr. Asp's dedication was evident even after his death with a significant donation to the Dakota County Library Foundation, a Foundation which he established and which continues to enrich library services in Dakota County. We want to share with you the story of this legendary librarian and his contributions to our library system.

Bill was a true Minnesota Scandinavian. He was born in Hutchinson; he loved the North Shore and spent much summertime "up north" with friends and family. He attended the University of MN for both undergraduate and graduate degrees and was a proud Gopher. His professional career was stellar and included the positions of Director of East Central Regional Library System, professor at the University of Iowa, and Minnesota State Librarian for 20 years. Bill was Director of the Dakota Library System from 1996 until his retirement in 2003. During his career he was recognized both nationally and statewide for his significant contributions to library services, particularly in the area of statewide sharing of resources and the functions and funding of the regional library systems.

Bill's impact on the Dakota County Library (DCL) System was significant. Major accomplishments included

  • creation of the Dakota County Library Foundation

  • expansion of library facilities

  • increased emphasis on library services in terms of customer access to information and assistance

  • establishment of "Ask a Librarian" email service

  • provision of multicultural programming

  • introduction of new formats including DVDs, eBooks, and "Book Group Kit in a Bag"

  • Improved library technology

On the personal level Bill demonstrated the best of librarianship--positive attitude, desire to serve the public, and a wonderful colleague with a delightful smile. Every profession has its heroes and Bill Asp was one of them in the library world.

The Dakota County Library Foundation is opening a scholarship to any Dakota County resident, Dakota County Library volunteer or staff member, studying the field of Library Science. This scholarship includes $2,500 towards the student’s financial obligations and the student may reapply annually.
